Guiding your life
Summary
Are you seeing the same number everywhere? Do you find yourself drawn to particular numbers, or consider a certain number to be lucky?
If you're interested in the potential power of numbers to improve success and prosperity in your life, then you'll be intrigued by the mystique of numerology.
In this post, I'm going to discuss what numerology is, how it works and how you can calculate your own life path and destiny numbers.
I'll also reveal results from my reading that truly shocked me.
What is Numerology?
Numerology is the study of numbers to reveal certain information about a person or the world, and has been used for thousands of years.
The general premise is that the world is a system, a system which can be analyzed and broken down into numbers.
These numbers can tell us more about the relationships between elements, people and the world at large.
Recurring digits in the Old Testament were used in Jewish mysticism while the Chaldeans – who ruled Babylonia from 625–539 BC – used a Babylonian numerology system to recognize the energy changes that occur when you or someone else speaks or thinks.
An example of numerology is the digits 11:11, which occultists translate as the number equivalent of Tetragrammaton, the name of the biblical God of Israel.
Other ancient cultures in Japan, China, Rome, and Greece have also left evidence of the practice of numerology.
It was Pythagoras, a philosopher from ancient Greece, whose work with numbers has heavily influenced modern day numerology teachings.
Being a mathematician, Pythagoras was interested in the way numbers make related to the physical world.
He focused on numerical interconnectivity and created a system that makes use of integers (whole numbers) to represent letters.
Dr. Julian Stenton brought life to Pythagoras' concept in modern times by coining the term ‘numerology’.
Is Numerology Related to Astrology?
Numerology serves us in a similar way to astrology.
Astrology covers interpretations and connections of zodiac signs and planets to certain personality traits and their outcomes. Similarly, numerology provides insight to traits and future events.
Indeed, numerologist Felicia Bender notes that numerology can provide us with insight to our optimal expression, tendencies, and obstacles in life.
This makes astrology and numerology a good combination to better understand yourself, as they can reveal how your traits are likely to influence your destiny in terms of career, relationships, wealth and general prosperity.
How Does Numerology Work?
Numerology posits that numbers are basic elements that form greater concepts to help us understand how the world works. Breaking down the world into numbers reveals information about relationships between elements.
Where people are concerned, numerology reveals a person's potential, greater purpose, probable destiny and how best to achieve success.
Calculating the numbers that are of significance to your life does not require you to be a genius in math.
In fact, all you need is a pen and paper and a handful of simple calculations.
It's true that a quite a few calculations may be involved, but the process mainly revolves around addition and does not require advanced forms of math.
Let's have a look at some important numbers.
Working Out Your Life Path Number
Your life path number is used to reveal your greater purpose and explain the reason behind your life’s circumstances.
It acts in the same way as your sun sign in astrology, thus making it the most important number in numerology.
To calculate your life path number, turn your birth month into its corresponding number and separate the month, date, and year.
Life Path Number Calculation Formula:
- Add together the two digits of the month you were born.
- Next, add together the two digits of the day you were born.
- Now add together the four digits of the year you were born.
- The last step may have given you a two digit-number, so this needs to be reduced further in the next step (unless it is 11, 22, or 33)
- Add the two digits together and this time the resulting number should be a single digit number.
Once you all have the three digits separated out on your paper for the month, day, and year, add them all together.
If the total is a two-digit number, add them together to arrive at just one digit. The resulting number is your life path number.
To illustrate, here is an example:
If you are born on December 30, 1999, then the numbers will be 12, 30, and 1999. Here's the calculation on those numbers:
- 1 + 2 = 3
- 3 + 0 = 3
- 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28
- 2 + 8 = 10
- 1 + 0 = 1
By taking the total, the sum becomes 3 + 3 + 1 = 7.
7 is the life path number.
The key to arriving at the correct number is to reduce double-digit numbers to single digits by adding them together until you arrive at just one digit.
Note: As mentioned in the steps, there is an exception to this rule. If you arrive at the numbers 11, 22, or 33, then that is the final number.
My Life Number (I am shocked!)
When I started researching this article I was skeptical of numerology but always remain open-minded.
My mother has always been into astrology, so I have grown up around her telling me what the various signs and placements of planets mean, but I'd never investigated numerology.
Working out my life number shocked me. It's 22!
According to my reading:
This number is the ‘Master Builder'. You are a builder of the bridge between the divine and humankind. Your life purpose is to assist mankind in spiritual transformation. You are this bridge and destined to bring healing, peace and higher energies to the earth.
This freaked me out because my no matter what I have done in my life, I have naturally gravitated towards this area. Even this blog is dedicated to healing and mind expansion!
I make transformational music, I love nature and growing vegetables, and all my conversations with friends and those I meet are generally centered around positive change and higher energy – be that through mindfulness, meditation, music and creative endeavors, diet, or activism.
At times I have fought against this pathway instead of embracing it, but having this numerology knowledge now helps me understand that this is probably not a coincidence and that I should follow this path, as it is probably what I was born to do.
Understanding Master Numbers
To identify their true meaning, the numbers in numerology, including your life path number, should be in single digits.
In cases where you encounter numbers with recurring digits like 11, they can no longer be split, as they already signify a certain meaning.
The numbers 11 and 22 that you may have attained when calculating your life path number are powerful.
This is because they are a dual representation of the numbers 2 and 4, which are their root numbers.
Master numbers imply a higher intensity, be it positive or negative. They may connote a higher level of success or learning that may take place in an environment with a high amount of pressure or stress.
It is important to know that master numbers may be special but they don’t mean that you’re already lucky in life.
Master numbers are all about a heightened intensity of consciousness and circumstance, and imply that you may be at the end of either extreme – the good or the bad.
Master Number Meanings
Master Number 11
As an intensified version of the number 2, the master number 11 has a heightened psychic ability that aims to achieve healing for itself and others. People with this number have gained meaningful gifts in intuition because of experiencing life difficulties.
Master Number 22
The master number 22 is based on the energy of the number 2, making for a ‘master builder'. This person usually leaves a notable legacy, as both intangible and tangible realities are fused well through life. This person typically has a difficult childhood, and as such becomes reliable, resourceful, and creative – even at a young age.
Master Number 33
A birth date that reduces down to 33 is very rare, but when it does it is indicative of a great leader. This individual's focus is on changing the world and uplifting the loving energy of mankind. A 33 is not concerned with personal ambition yet has great devotion to their cause.
Using Letters to Find Your Destiny Number
Pythagoras’ studies led him to develop a system that assigns numerical values to letters. This development is a significant means of deriving the root numbers for words and names’.
Numerologists identify the root number as a destiny number that represents how you can achieve your greater goals.
Your destiny number, also known as your expression number, makes you acutely aware of your traits, abilities, desires, and goals.
Here’s a look at Pythagoras’ numerical and alphabetical system:
- A, J, and S are equivalent to 1
- B, K, and T are equivalent to 2
- C, L, and U are equivalent to 3
- D, M, and V are equivalent to 4
- E, N, and W are equivalent to 5
- F, O, and X are equivalent to 6
- G, P, and Y are equivalent to 7
- H, Q, and Z are equivalent to 8
- I and R are equivalent to 9.
Calculating Your Destiny Number
Similar to calculating your life path number, you follow the same technique of adding and later on reducing the double digit numbers.
This time, the digits will replace the letters of your name.
If your full name is John Doe, here’s how a calculation of the destiny number will look:
- J(1) + O(6) + H(8) + N(5) = 20, making it 2 + 0 = 2
- D(4) + O(6) + E(5) = 15, making it 1 + 5 = 6
Adding 6 and 2 becomes 8, which is the destiny number.
Remember, if you get a double digit number, half it again to get the final number, unless it is 11, 22, or 33.
Each destiny number carries a different meaning, helping you understand your place in the world.
My Destiny Number (Expression Number)
Annoyingly (hah) I'm the nurturer. This is spot on. I've been taking in strays, so to speak since a young age.
In fact, they used to say I have an old head on young shoulders because I was always able to give advice that was seemingly beyond my years.
Again, having this confirmed alters my perception. Now that I am aware that I am predisposed to be compassionate and nurture others, I need to pay greater attention to setting boundaries.
I need to be careful of not wasting my energy and time and being guilt-tripped, and ensure my efforts are directed to worthy people and causes.

Positive and Negative Numbers
Positive and negative numbers connote balance.
Each number has a positive feature, but it is also dashed with a negative feature that can outbalance the positive if you don’t change your perception and actions.
Numbers correlate to how you’ll deal with different areas in your life, be that relationships, career, or health.
A good interpretation of numerology can be effective when it takes into consideration both the positive and negative aspects of your life.
This enables you to avoid being blinded by the positive, and instead enables you to work on your goals – even if some of your numbers already foresee a bright future ahead of you.

Using Numbers to Guide Your Life
Numerology helps shed light on your personality, purpose and destiny, and your birth date plays a huge part in shaping your journey through life.
Numerology will make you realize that there are no coincidences in the universe, and that everything is a delicate balance of science (math (equations) and vibrations).
While everything may seem predetermined, you still have the power of choice, and numerology helps you understand you that bit better so that you can take control of your life path.
Numerology highlights your good traits and those that might potentially lead you down the wrong path. It tells you what opportunities await you if you take action in alignment with your character.
These opportunities can be barriers when overlooked, and not applying numerology means you deprive yourself of being acutely aware of the things that can negatively impact your life.
This is why numerology is so helpful for many like me, because it helps us to better navigate life's journey.
Indeed, many successful entertainers and business persons advocate the use of numerology and attribute their success to its application.
In Summary
Numbers can tell us more about ourselves. Of course, a leap of faith is involved in its understanding, and many will dismiss numerology as nonsense.
That being said, it is surprising how many skeptics are surprised at the outcome of their reading, and how closely it resonates with their personality and chosen life path.
The aim of numerology is to give you a simple but clearer understanding of yourself.
It can help you make sense of your journey and lead you in the right direction, giving you a sense of what you should stop, start, and continue doing in life.
In turn you might have a better chance of finding a place you feel more at home in the world.
There are a number of other aspects to a numerology reading that I haven't covered in this post. A full reading will help you understand other key elements and give you full insight to unexplored characteristics, deeper motivations, life potential, and more.
